Becoming A Tutor & In-Clinic Training

For Parents & Students

Dyslexia is the most common learning disability affecting up to one in five children. Sadly, most schools are unprepared to address the needs of this population. That’s where the Center comes in. The Center provides free Multisensory Structured Language Education instruction to children with dyslexia from surrounding communities. School aged children attend our after-school program to receive 1:1 Orton-Gillingham instruction, twice a week, for two years, with significant gains realized in key reading measures.

Becoming a Tutor

With the recently passed dyslexia legislation in New Hampshire, HB1644, and Maine our certified tutors are in high demand. Some area schools are only now beginning to hire new teaching staff who are Orton Gillingham certified. Don’t miss out on this amazing career opportunity. Many of our trainees who are recent college graduates attest that our certification made the difference in their being hired. Sign up now to become a certified Orton Gillingham tutor/teacher. Please contact the Seacoast Learning Center Director to learn more about the Orton Gillingham certification process and program. You may also download a trainee application packet and apply today.

Certification Requirements

To become a certified Orton Gillingham tutor/teacher you must have at least a bachelor’s degree (from any field). Previous teaching experience is not required. The Children’s Dyslexia Centers, Inc. program offers training for individuals interested in receiving initial certification as tutors/teachers in the Orton Gillingham approach.

Certification requirements include fifty hours of classroom instruction and one hundred hours of practicum work under the supervision of qualified professionals. You will also be required to tutor two children, twice a week, at a Children’s Dyslexia Centers, Inc. facility. Comparable Orton Gillingham certification programs from other organizations cost between $3000.00 and $6000.00 dollars and still lack the comprehensiveness of our free program.

What Students & Parents Are Saying

  • The expert level of instruction and constant support throughout the training gave me a very meaningful experience at the Seacoast Learning Center. The training was in-depth and provided me with an incredible amount of resources to add to my professional practice. This instruction has provided me with a systematic approach to using multisensory instruction that is more individualized and appropriate for my students. I absolutely suggest this program to others!

Kelsey H. Speech & Language Pathologist
  • Having the opportunity to see two students progress and gain confidence in their abilities has been so rewarding. The support from the staff including specific feedback, suggestions for my lesson plans, and personal , one-on-one observations and feedback have cemented my understanding of the practice and exceeded my expectations.

    Ingrid P. Teacher
  • Before my training, I didn’t appreciate before what a pervasive, devastating, but remediable condition dyslexia is. I’ve become more attuned for watching the students I am responsible for- Including those I encounter infrequently or merely test, to looks for signs of elements of dyslexia (low, flat DIBELS, not sounding out new words, difficulty with PA tasks) including in otherwise bright 5th graders, to find ways to address some of their needs, even if they can’t get the full 2 hour 1-on-1 treatment of my OG students. This has added urgency (and volume) to my efforts within our building to advocate for these kids’ needs.

    Susan R. Teacher
  • I learned what I had expected and then some. The content of the course exceeded my expectations. I now feel like I have all the resources that I need to effectively teach reading to students with a wide diversity of needs. I have a deeper understanding of reading and language disabilities and the appropriate tools and methods to apply in practice. I feel like I have the resources to effectively teach, even if I suddenly I had no access to resources and materials in our school. I now intend to take what I know to enhance the “How” of teaching.
