Dyslexia is the most common learning disability affecting up to one in five children. Sadly, most schools are unprepared to address the needs of this population. That’s where the Center comes in. The Center provides free Multisensory Structured Language Education instruction to children with dyslexia from surrounding communities. School aged children attend our after-school program to receive 1:1 Orton-Gillingham instruction, twice a week, for two years, with significant gains realized in key reading measures.

Certification Requirements

To become a certified Orton Gillingham tutor/teacher you must have at least a bachelor’s degree (from any field). Previous teaching experience is not required. The Children’s Dyslexia Centers, Inc. program offers training for individuals interested in receiving initial certification as tutors/teachers in the Orton Gillingham approach.

Certification requirements include fifty hours of classroom instruction and one hundred hours of practicum work under the supervision of qualified professionals. You will also be required to tutor two children, twice a week, at a Children’s Dyslexia Centers, Inc. facility. Comparable Orton Gillingham certification programs from other organizations cost between $3000.00 and $6000.00 dollars and still lack the comprehensiveness of our free program.

Before my training, I didn’t appreciate before what a pervasive, devastating, but remediable condition dyslexia is. I’ve become more attuned for watching the students I am responsible for- Including those I encounter infrequently or merely test, to looks for signs of elements of dyslexia (low, flat DIBELS, not sounding out new words, difficulty with PA tasks) including in otherwise bright 5th graders, to find ways to address some of their needs, even if they can’t get the full 2 hour 1-on-1 treatment of my OG students. Certification Process

Sessions are filled on a first come/first serve basis (maximum of 10 scholars per year). Once your application is received, you will be scheduled for an interview with the Center Director. If you are accepted into the program you will be given text materials and assignments. These assignments should be started immediately and are due at the first session held in April.

Training sessions are held on Saturdays (see our calendar page). Sessions will be held in the following months; April, May,June, September, October, December, January, and February. Sessions run from 8:30AM – 3:30PM at our center located at 29 Hanson Street in Rochester, NH (please visit our contact page for directions).

Scholars may choose to begin tutoring during our July/August summer sessions or they or you may wait until September when the center opens for the new academic term. All lessons/tutoring sessions are supervised by one of our professional staff members while you train.

Our fifty hour Orton-Gillingham Approach Initial Skills training, and our one hundred hour practicum, count as professional development hours by schools and SAU’s throughout NH, MA, and ME. Trainees may earn Graduate credit through Keene State College(NH).
